A stunning performance that solidified their claim for a Champions League spot: Borussia Dortmund are firmly back in the hunt for one of the coveted top four spots after a dominant 4-0 win over Wolfsburg.
Niko Kovač had his team perfectly prepared against his former side, Wolfsburg: from start to finish, there was never any doubt that Dortmund would come out on top.
Here’s a recap of the Bundesliga clash on matchday 32:
Much like several other matches this Saturday, one team started on fire, Dortmund’s leading striker Serhou Guirassy found the net in the 3rd minute, thanks to an “accidental” assist from Julian Brandt.
Although Dortmund controlled the match, they struggled to create clear-cut chances after the early goal.
Ralph Hasenhüttl, rumored to leave Wolfsburg at the end of the season, couldn’t rally his team to exploit Dortmund’s defensive gaps, BVB maintained full control without extending their lead. The halftime score stood at 1-0.
It was in the second half that Dortmund made their dominance count, adding more goals to their tally. Guirassy bagged his second of the match with a brilliant assist from Pascal Groß in the 59th minute.
But it was Karim Adeyemi who became the star of the show at the Westfalen Stadion: he scored two quick goals in the 69th and 73rd minutes, wrapping up a 4-0 victory for Borussia Dortmund. Final score: BVB 4-0 Wolfsburg.
Dortmund has reignited the passion of their fans, especially after some underwhelming performances earlier in the season. If they can maintain this form and energy, what once seemed like an “impossible” Champions League qualification is now well within reach.
On the other hand, Wolfsburg finds themselves stuck in Bundesliga’s no man’s land: with no chance of European qualification, their season is effectively over. At least they don’t have to worry about relegation.
As for Ralph Hasenhüttl, his future at Wolfsburg seems more uncertain than ever before.
