The chairman of the Presidential Tax Reform Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has called on Nigerians to focus on the broader benefits of the proposed tax reform bills rather than allowing a few contentious provisions to hinder their passage.
Recall that since President Bola Tinubu presented the bills to the National Assembly, they have generated significant controversy.
Prominent northern leaders have expressed strong opposition, claiming that the bills unfairly impact the region.
The National Economic Council has also suggested that the president withdraw the bills to allow for broader consultations.
However, President Tinubu has expressed his preference for the bills to proceed through the legislative process.
Speaking at a town hall event organized by Channels Television on Monday, Oyedele, whose committee was responsible for developing the tax reform proposals, highlighted the comprehensive nature of the bills.
He emphasized that the legislation includes over 200 provisions designed to address Nigeria’s economic challenges and set the country on a path to prosperity.
Oyedele stressed that the focus should not be on a few provisions that can be easily addressed but on the larger transformative potential of the bills.
“These bills have more than 200 transformative provisions to fix our country and set us on the right path to prosperity.
“We should not allow one or two provisions that we can easily discuss and agree on to become the pain or the bottleneck,” he said.
