The Katsina State Government has announced plans to revive the Lambar Rimi 10MW Wind Farm, which has been non-functional for nearly two decades.
This initiative aims to address the state’s growing energy needs and contribute to Nigeria’s renewable energy goals.
Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda made the announcement during a meeting with Vergnet Groupe, the Original Equipment Manufacturer for the project, in Paris, France.
The governor expressed his commitment to working closely with Vergnet Groupe to rehabilitate the wind farm and restore its operational capacity.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Sunday in Abuja by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed.
Governor Radda, accompanied by Dr. Hafiz Ibrahim Ahmed, Special Adviser on Power and Energy, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Paris following productive discussions with development partners and industry experts.
Governor Radda highlighted the significance of the wind farm in the region’s energy infrastructure, noting that the revitalization would align with Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Master Plan and the country’s target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.
The governor also revealed plans to complement the wind farm with the establishment of a 10MW Solar Farm, which would provide clean, renewable energy to approximately 4,400 homes across Katsina State.
These projects are part of the state’s vision to become a leader in renewable energy in Nigeria and contribute to the nation’s transition to a sustainable energy future. Governor Radda emphasized the importance of these developments as a means to address the state’s energy demands and support broader environmental goals, according to Independent.
In addition to the wind and solar projects, the Katsina State Government has signed a strategic MoU with Ocean Solutions Energie, a French-based company specializing in renewable energy projects across Africa. The company, represented by Chairman Mr. Minkaila Salami, shares the Katsina government’s vision for advancing renewable energy solutions, supporting Nigeria’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2060, and expanding access to sustainable electricity.
Governor Radda also revealed plans to establish a mini hydroelectric power station as part of a pilot project at Danja Dam. This initiative aims to provide reliable, renewable energy to local communities, serving as a model for future hydroelectric developments across the state’s 43 dams. The project will supply energy to critical local infrastructure, including irrigation systems, a water treatment plant, Small and Medium-scale Enterprises, and households.
The governor assured that the state government would provide the necessary financial support for the successful installation and long-term sustainability of the mini hydroelectric power station. He emphasized that the new MoU aligns with the provisions of the Electricity Act of 2023, which focuses on decentralized energy solutions and the integration of renewable energy sources into Nigeria’s power grid. The project also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7, which promotes affordable and clean energy.
The governor said, “This will provide clean and renewable energy to power approximately to 4,400 homes across Katsina State.
“These projects are integral to Katsina State’s vision to become a leading renewable energy hub in Nigeria and contribute to the country’s broader transition to a sustainable energy future.”
