Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reiterated that he does not belong to any political party, describing himself as a “no-party statesman.”
His remarks came as he reflected on the current challenges facing Nigeria, urging Nigerians to remain hopeful and optimistic despite the difficult circumstances.
Obasanjo made the statement on Saturday during a thanksgiving service at the Methodist Church, Nigeria, Cathedral of Unity in Abuja.
The event was held to celebrate the 80th birthday of Onyema Ugochukwu, a journalist and former Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission.
During his speech, Obasanjo commended Ugochukwu for his loyalty and support during the 1999 election campaigns. He noted that Ugochukwu had stood by him even though Chief Alex Ekwueme, a fellow candidate in the Peoples Democratic Party, also contested for the same position, according to Daily Post.
The former President urged Ugochukwu to remain steadfast in his faith and continue contributing to humanity.
He emphasized the importance of love, urging the celebrant to maintain love for family, friends, foes, community, state, country, and humanity throughout his life.
Obasanjo also reminded the gathering of a key message from the Bible, quoting 1 Corinthians 13, which stresses the enduring power of faith and hope. Despite the difficult political and social climate in Nigeria, Obasanjo encouraged everyone to stay optimistic and committed to making a positive impact. He concluded by reflecting on his own political journey, noting that his past rivalry with Alex Ekwueme in the PDP was part of their shared history.
“But remember what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13. Your faith must not diminish. You must never lose hope. Even when things are as gloomy as they are in Nigeria today, we must remain optimistic and hopeful.
“And finally, you must live and continue to live a life of love. Love for your family.
“Love for friends and foes. Love for your community. Love for your state. Love for your country. Love for humanity. And love for God.
“When we came together, it was during the campaign. I’ve known a little bit about you by your reputation. We were two candidates competing in PDP – myself and Alex Ekweme,” he said.
