A prominent Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Comrade Usman Okai Austin, has endorsed Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State as a qualified candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
Okai cited Makinde’s impressive leadership track record and extensive political experience as qualifications for the nation’s top job. He described Makinde as “overwhelmingly qualified” to contest the presidency.
In a statement he issued, Okai said, “There’s no harm in a governor aspiring for the Presidency.”
He noted that while Makinde has yet to announce his post-tenure intentions, there is natural momentum among supporters calling for his candidacy.
“The decision to contest is solely his,” Okai stated, affirming Makinde’s right to enter the race, if he so chooses.”
Makinde’s governance style and achievements in Oyo State have earned him national recognition, making him a strong contender for the PDP ticket. His candidacy is seen as a generational shift in Nigerian politics, resonating with younger voters, according to Daily Post.
The PDP chieftain dismissed claims that Makinde is working against the party’s interests, emphasizing that his aspirations are legitimate. Okai noted that the decision to contest lies solely with Makinde.
While Makinde has not officially declared his intention to run, Okai’s endorsement adds to the growing speculation about his potential
presidential bid. This development may potentially impact the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.
“Though it may be early to speculate, Makinde represents a generational shift in Nigerian politics, which resonates with the younger population.
“As one of Nigeria’s prominent PDP leaders, Makinde has established a nationwide network that could support a presidential bid.”
