The Peoples Democratic Party crisis has taken a fresh turn as former Benue State Governor, Senator Gabriel Suswam, demanded the immediate removal of Umar Damagum as the party’s Acting National Chairman.
Suswam made this call during an expanded caucus meeting of the PDP in Makurdi.
“Damagum must go, whether they like it or not,” Suswam stated firmly, accusing the party’s national leadership of deliberately undermining the PDP.
Suswam cited poor performance and leadership failures under Damagum’s leadership as reasons for his removal, according to Politics Nigeria.
He expressed concerns about the party’s direction and accused the national leadership of undermining the PDP.
The former governor alleged conspiracies within the party’s national leadership aimed at destroying the PDP.
He specifically criticized the conduct of local government and state congresses in Benue State, describing them as flawed.
Suswam questioned the credibility of the delegates chosen, noting that no valid ward or local government congresses were held before the state congress. He vowed to explore alternative strategies to rectify the situation.
Benue State PDP Chairman, Christian Adaba Abah, expressed solidarity with Suswam, thanking party members for their support and urging them to remain committed.
Other leaders, including Udu Nyitse, Cletus Upaa, John Ngbede, and Hyacinth Inyakuma, expressed confidence in the party’s resilience and optimism about its future prospects.
The development adds to the PDP’s internal strife, which has delayed its National Executive Committee meeting twice.
The party’s stakeholders, including governors, are struggling to take control and position themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
“The process was a sham, and it will not stand,” Suswam declared, vowing to explore alternative strategies to rectify the situation.
In a show of solidarity, the Benue State Chairman of the PDP, Mr Christian Adaba Abah, thanked party members for their unwavering support and urged them to stay committed. “You will not regret your loyalty to the party,” Abah reassured.
