In a significant blow to the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State, former Deputy Speaker Omon Ezomon has resigned from the party few days to the governorship election in the state.
Ezomon, a three-time member of the state House of Assembly, cited internal crisis and alienation from decision-making processes as reasons for his departure, according to Politics Nigeria.
In a letter dated September 16, 2024, Ezomon notified the PDP Chairman of Ward 5 of his immediate resignation.
The development comes just days before the September 21 governorship election, described by Governor Godwin Obaseki as “crucial.”
Ezomon’s exit is expected to impact the PDP’s support base in Owan West, potentially benefiting opposing parties.
Analysts speculate Ezomon may join the All Progressives Congress, although his next move remains unclear.
The PDP’s internal strife has raised concerns about its prospects in the upcoming election.
Governorship candidate Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party and the APC’s candidate are poised to capitalize on the PDP’s internal divisions.
Edo State residents will head to the polls on September 21 to choose their next governor.
“I am deeply saddened by the glaring disunity and lack of leadership that have foisted division within the ranks of the party. For my own peace of mind and mental health, I have made the painful decision to leave,” Ezomon stated in the letter.
