The Senate has appealed to organizers of the planned nationwide protests to exercise patience and allow President Bola Tinubu’s administration more time to implement its economic policies.
In an emergency session on Wednesday, lawmakers urged protesters to shelve their plans, citing the need for policies to mature.
The Senate argued that measures like the new national minimum wage and student loan implementation require more time to yield results, according to Politics Nigeria.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that one year is not sufficient for policies to take effect.
The Senate pledged to legislate on matters that will bring relief to the people. The emergency session was attended by 75 of the 109 senators.
The protests, scheduled for August 1-10, 2024, aim to address economic grievances.
The Senate’s appeal seeks to avert potential unrest and allow the administration’s policies to unfold.
“The Senate, in closed-door, reviewed the impending protests and urges that one year is not long enough for the policies being implemented by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to yield the desired results,” Akpabio stated.
