The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the prosecution of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is brought to a logical conclusion.
Speaking with journalists at the commission’s headquarters in the Jabi area of Abuja on Tuesday, Olukoyede stated, “I would resign if Bello is not prosecuted.”
He further vowed that all those who obstructed the arrest of the former governor would be brought to book.
The anti-graft agency is seeking to arraign Bello on 19 counts bordering on alleged money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds amounting to N80.2 billion.
“No matter what anyone does or the amount of attack against the anti-graft agency, I and my men will not relent in helping to sanitize the country,” Olukoyede asserted.
He emphasized that the EFCC needs the support of Nigerians to succeed, stating, “If the agency fails, Nigeria fails.”
Olukoyede also highlighted that the current efforts have contributed to the stabilization of the Naira and the foreign exchange market.
In the latest development, the EFCC has served a copy of the charge sheet detailing alleged fraud to the tune of N80 billion against the immediate past governor to his lawyer, Abdulwahab Mohamed.
This action followed an order by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, after Bello’s absence in court for his arraignment on the 19-count charge of alleged money laundering.
