In its bid to put an end to the ongoing political crisis in Niger Republic, A delegation of the Economic Community of West African States on Thursday, met with Niger coup leader, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, to have a roundtable discussion on the issue.
Meeting with the Tchiani, was the delegation, led by former Nigerian military leader, General Abdulsalami Abubakar and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who were warmly received by the General and other top brass of the military junta.
It would be recalled that the military guard in the country had given the elected president, Mohamed Bazoum and his family a house arrest, at the presidential lodge, which later led to the declaration of a new government by the guard leader, Tchiani.
However, the Thursday meeting comes after ECOWAS gave the military rulers a one-week ultimatum to return the country to democratic government.
The regional bloc during its meeting in Abuja on Sunday, imposed sanctions on Niger, including cutting the transmission of electricity supply, to the country.
Similarly, President Bola Tinubu in his role as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, sent a delegation to Niger to address the crisis.
A presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale in a statement on Thursday, said: “The action was in line with the resolution reached at the end of the extraordinary summit of the ECOWAS held last weekend in Abuja.”
The current situation in the country has however been condemned by the international community, including the United Nations, the African Union, and the United States, who have all called for a return of power, to the democratically-elected president of the country.
