There are emerging indications suggesting that the former governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, and Senator Ajibola Basiru, the spokesperson for the ninth Senate, could potentially be appointed as the acting National Chairman and Secretary, respectively, of the ruling All Progressives Congress. The official announcement of these appointments is expected to take place on Thursday.
According to The PUNCH, the APC’s National Executive Committee is expected to convene on Thursday and it has been reported that a decision could be made by party leaders during the NEC meeting.
At the APC National Secretariat on Blantyre Crescent in the Wuse district of Abuja, on Sunday, congratulations billboards bearing Ganduje’s image replaced banners of the outgoing APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
Premium Politics reported that Adamu and then APC National Secretary of APC, Iyiola Omisore, three weeks ago tendered their resignation amid a party crisis.
According to a statement released by the governing party, the National Caucus and NEC sessions are scheduled for August 2 and 3, respectively.
A trustworthy source in the Presidency stated that the meetings would be opportunities to discuss the ongoing crisis rocking the party leadership, but the agenda for the sessions has not been made public.
“The agenda is out. But there is nothing basic in it. But, of course, some shenanigans will be put up to officially announce the new acting chairman and secretary,” the source said.
When asked if he was positive that Ganduje and Basiru will be the “new acting chairman and secretary,” the source claimed that they were still the top picks of the APC governors and President Bola Tinubu.
“We are basically saying the same thing. It is just to announce that these people are now in charge,” he said.
The party stalwart admitted that he had little influence over why the President and the ruling party permitted the National Executive Committee to ratify the incoming leaders rather than a convention.
“Well, we were told that the NEC can work in place of a convention. They are the ultimate decision maker.
“If they confirm them (Ganduje), there may be no need for any convention again. But regarding the other vacant positions of Welfare Officer, Deputy National Publicity Secretary and Vice Chairman for North-West left by Lukman, it is hoped that they will give the NWC the power to fill them. That way, they will avoid budgeting again for another mini-convention,” he said.
Attempts to obtain a response from the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, were futile.
