The President-elect, Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress National Working Committee members, and the lawmakers-elect, are expected to meet, over the 10th National Assembly leadership.
According to the information gathered, the meeting was scheduled to hold in Abuja this week, ahead of the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly on June 5, 2023.
However, the planned caucus meeting is against the personal interest of the members, who are jolting for the position of the president of the Senate and the post of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, respectively.
It was learned from a report from Tinubu’s camp, that the President-elect, who arrived in the country yesterday, after a month of vacation in France, will head the meeting, to determine how the leadership of the NASS, should be shared among the members.
The party’s position to wade into the leadership tussle between the members was said to have been a planned action, towards achieving a common understanding within the party, to avoid a repeat of the 2015 scenario, which handed over the NASS leadership, to the opposition.
The Director of Publicity of the party, Bala Ibrahim, who spoke with The PUNCH on Sunday, also confirmed that the NWC meeting may take place this week after party members must have returned from the holiday break and their trip to Saudi Arabia, for lesser hajj.
“We are expecting the President-elect to arrive hopefully from tomorrow (Monday). I may not be sure of the exact date, but I think the NWC meeting will also take place this week after everybody must have returned from the holiday break and their trip from Umrah,” he said.
However, the members-elect have agreed to go by the party decision, to decide the zoning of the leadership positions in the 10th National Assembly, to avoid a repeat of the 8th Assembly mistake.
Expressing their willingness to abide by the party’s decision, the lawmakers called for fairness and equity in the distribution of offices and positions, in the party.
