The United State has through the Federal Government returned $954,000 stolen by the former Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, to the state government.
According to Channels, the U.S ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard made this announcement at the press briefing on Thursday, in Abuja.
She said, “The official salary of the former governor during his tenure as a public servant from 1999 to his impeachment in 2005 did not match the said amount.”
“However, during that time, he accumulated millions of dollars through abuse of office, money laundering,” she added.
Alamieyeseigha was a former governor of Bayelsa who was impeached in 2005 on the allegations of corruption. He died at the age of 62 in October, 2015.
The president of Nigeria, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has immediately ordered the retrieved funds to be utilized in enhancing the state’s healthcare.
