The National Assembly will reconvene on Tuesday, January 17, 2022, after its holiday recess.
Premium Politics reported that the lawmakers proceeded on its holiday recess on the 28th of December 2020, which saw them have a 3 weeks break from official duties.
As plenary resumes on Tuesday, the lawmakers are expected to address outstanding matters of national importance, one of which is the President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) request for restructuring of Ways and Means Advances from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The 2023 Appropriation Bill, the 2022 Supplementary Appropriation Bill, and the Finance Bill 2022 were all passed by the National Assembly on December 28, 2022, and it then left for the break.
Buhari had asked the Senate and the House of Representatives to accept the restructuring of the WMAs granted to the Federal Government by the CBN a few days earlier, noting that the remaining amount as on December 19, 2022 was N23,719,703,774,306.90.
The presidential proposal has not yet been taken up by the House, but on December 28, 2022, the Senate accorded it accelerated processing, which led to a setback.
Buhari further warned that if the National Assembly rejected a loan-to-bond exchange request on the CBN’s overdrafts to the government, the country would pay an additional N1.8 trillion in interest this year.
