The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu said Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, had no intention of implementing the agreement signed with striking universities.
Adamu made this remark when he appeared on Channels TV on Wednesday on Politics today speaking on the seven-month-old strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The minister added that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s government is ready to give the ASUU its offer if the union obliged.
Adamu argued that the Jonathan-led administration promised to give ASUU N1.3 trillion in the space of 6 years which was unsustainable.
He made this remark while explaining that the Buhari-led government’s offer to the ASUU is not just sustainable, the Federal government is ready to pay to settle ASUU at once.
Adamu revealed that the FG is only waiting for ASUU’s acceptance of Buhari’s government offer and the strike action will be shelved.
He said, “If they (ASUU) accept it, that’s all, it a one-off thing, is not like that of Jonathan. I do believe with all due respect to that government, even when it signed that agreement; I don’t think it had the intention to fulfil it, because the money was just not there.
“The offer that I offer the unions is something that the government can pay off if they agree. The initiative is not the same as that of Jonathan who promised that he will give them N1.3 trillion over 6 years – our government is not like that.”
Speaking on the difference between what the Buahr-government has for ASUU and what Jonathan offered, Adamu said, “the difference is; here is a package, if they take then it is already over.”
