Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has cancelled all elaborate plans for his 64th birthday, choosing instead to mourn with victims of recent violent attacks in the state.
Ortom, who clocked 64, made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday through his media aide, Terver Akase.
The former governor emphasized that his decision was driven by the ongoing wave of violence that has plagued various communities across Benue.
“In light of the ongoing intensified invasion, attacks, and senseless killings of innocent Benue people by Fulani terrorists across various local government areas, I have decided not to hold any celebration or festivities,” Ortom stated.
Rather than celebrate, Ortom said he stands in solidarity with the bereaved families and those affected by the crisis, sharing in their grief and extending heartfelt sympathy.
He also expressed appreciation for the support and goodwill he has received over the years.
“I remain grateful to God Almighty for His mercy, good health, and blessings over the past 64 years, and I reaffirm my commitment to the service of God and humanity in the years ahead,” he said.
Ortom urged Nigerians to continue offering prayers for the victims and the entire country, noting the dire need for divine intervention amid worsening insecurity.
He also called for special prayers for the nation’s leadership, urging Nigerians to “pray for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume,” while asking God to “grant them wisdom and strength to tackle the nation’s security challenges.”
