A police inspector serving in Rivers State, identified as Maxwell Zabu, has reportedly taken his own life under circumstances that are still unclear.
Zabu, who was said to be attached to the former Chairman of the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, allegedly shot himself yesterday at the residence of his superior.
It was gathered that the incident was reported at the Eagle Island Police Post, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Azikiwe Police Division in Illoabuchi, Mile 2 Diobu, Port Harcourt.
Sources confirmed that detectives from the Azikiwe Division had visited the scene shortly after the incident as part of preliminary investigations to determine the cause and nature of the occurrence.
Speaking on the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the development, stating that while suicide is suspected, a thorough investigation is underway to uncover the full details.
She said, “It is suspected that the Police officer killed himself, but investigation is ongoing to ascertain what actually transpired.”
In a related development, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Port Harcourt, to allow for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.
