Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced on Monday morning, marking the end of a 12-year papacy that was defined by humility, reform, and resilience in the face of persistent health challenges.
Vatican officials confirmed that the pontiff passed away peacefully in the early hours of the morning at his residence, Casa Santa Marta. His death came less than a day after he made what would be his final public appearance on Easter Sunday.
“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican’s camerlengo, in an official statement.
Despite his frail condition, Pope Francis was present on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica just the day before his death. Seated in a wheelchair, he smiled and waved to a large crowd of worshippers gathered to celebrate Easter.
“Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Easter,” he said, in what would become his final public words.
Though he was visibly weak, the Pope made an effort to share in the joy of the celebration. His traditional Easter speech and blessing were delivered by one of his aides as he sat and watched attentively. Following the blessing, he was driven around St Peter’s Square in his iconic white open-roof vehicle. The car stopped several times to allow him to bless babies brought forward by their parents.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, became the first Jesuit Pope and the first from the Americas when he was elected in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Over the course of his 12-year pontificate, he was known for his progressive stance on several issues, including climate change, interfaith dialogue, and social justice, while maintaining core Catholic teachings.
Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis contended with various health concerns, including sciatica, respiratory infections, and colon surgery. Nevertheless, he remained active in his role, often insisting on carrying out his duties despite physical limitations.
The Vatican is expected to announce further details regarding funeral arrangements and the papal conclave in the coming days.
