A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Segun Showunmi, has asserted that Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, stands a strong chance of winning the 2027 general election, but only if he returns to the PDP.
Showunmi made this statement while speaking on the Mic On Show podcast, where he argued that Obi’s presidential ambition would be better served within the structure of a more established political party.
He acknowledged that Obi, who left the PDP for the Labour Party before the 2023 elections, commands significant support beyond his traditional South-East base, enjoying growing popularity in other key geopolitical zones.
“If his numbers and the animated energy that is following him were to follow him into the PDP and he is the presidential candidate, I can guarantee you Peter would take the Southeast, Peter would take the South-South, Peter would take the Christian North, and Peter would take the North Central,” Showunmi stated.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, left the PDP in the build-up to the 2023 general election after failing to secure the party’s presidential ticket. He joined the Labour Party and contested against Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.
Despite mounting a strong challenge and securing victories in 12 states, including the Federal Capital Territory, Obi ultimately came third in the final tally announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, with Tinubu declared the winner.
