The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a nationwide directive for reinforced security to ensure a peaceful and incident-free holiday season as Christians in Nigeria join the global community in celebrating Easter 2025.
In a statement released on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP extended heartfelt Easter wishes to Christians, encouraging reflection on the season’s central themes of hope, renewal, and sacrifice.
To bolster public safety, Egbetokun has instructed all Commissioners of Police and their supervising Assistant Inspectors-General of Police to scale up visibility policing, strengthen intelligence gathering, and enhance surveillance operations within their areas of responsibility.
He further ordered the strategic placement of police personnel at key locations, including places of worship, recreation spots, highways, and other public venues, to prevent any potential security threats during the Easter festivities.
“The IGP hereby directs Commissioners of Police across all State Commands and Formations, and their supervising Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, to enhance visibility policing, extended vigilance, and intelligence gathering to ensure a safe and secure festive celebration for all citizens.
“He also emphasises the critical importance of enhanced patrol and strategic deployment of personnel to places of worship, recreation centres, major highways, and other public spaces to deter criminal activities and provide swift responses to any security challenges that may arise,” the statement read.
Egbetokun also appealed to the public to support the efforts of law enforcement by sharing timely and accurate information that could help prevent security breaches.
He urged citizens to stay alert, exercise caution, and celebrate responsibly. He also warned against dangerous driving practices during and after the Easter season.
“The IGP calls on members of the public to cooperate with the Police and other security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist in preventing the breakdown of law and order during this period. Citizens are therefore urged to remain security conscious, act with moderation, and avoid reckless driving on highways during the festive period and beyond,” he said.
