Eintracht Frankfurt bolstered their Champions League hopes on Sunday with a commanding 3-0 Bundesliga victory over struggling Heidenheim, while Werder Bremen staged a dramatic late comeback to defeat 10-man VfB Stuttgart 2-1.
Frankfurt struck early, with Jean-Matteo Bahoya opening the scoring in the 10th minute following a slick one-touch exchange involving Hugo Ekitike and Fares Chaibi.
The hosts doubled their advantage just before halftime, as Ekitike turned provider again, this time teeing up centre-back Robin Koch, who buried his finish into the bottom right corner with the composure of a seasoned striker.
Ekitike added a goal of his own in the 71st minute, pouncing on a loose ball to slot into an open net and secure all three points for Frankfurt.
With the win, Frankfurt stay third on the table, maintaining a three-point cushion over RB Leipzig. Heidenheim remain in deep trouble, sitting 16th and occupying the relegation playoff spot.
Burke delivers in the clutch for Bremen
In Stuttgart, Werder Bremen’s Oliver Burke was the hero, netting a 90th-minute winner to seal a 2-1 victory and complete his brace.
Stuttgart had drawn first blood in the 19th minute, courtesy of Leonidas Stergiou. The defender timed his run perfectly, bypassing the Bremen backline and rounding goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, who had rushed off his line and failed to make contact—before slotting in coolly.
However, Bremen hit back just over 10 minutes later. A swift transition following a Stuttgart goal-kick saw Mitchell Weiser win possession and pick out Burke, who calmly side-footed in the equalizer.
The hosts’ task grew harder when Nick Woltemade saw red for a second bookable offense in the 65th minute, putting Stuttgart down to 10 men.
Stuttgart’s keeper Alexander Nübel kept their hopes alive with a vital save in the 83rd minute, but he was powerless to stop Burke’s decisive second goal just moments before full-time.
“I’m very proud of this performance and of the entire team. It was a very important win. It gives us more self-confidence,” Burke said after the match.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Bayern Munich had to settle for a 2-2 draw in their Klassiker showdown with Borussia Dortmund, while champions Bayer Leverkusen were held to a goalless stalemate by Union Berlin.
Bayern continue to lead the Bundesliga, holding a six-point advantage over Leverkusen with five matches remaining.
