A late-night fire outbreak has devastated twelve shops at the Mayegun Cement Store Market in Araromi, Agodi Gate, Ibadan, destroying goods worth millions of naira.
The inferno, which erupted on Thursday night, was confirmed by the Oyo State Fire Service.
The agency’s General Manager, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, disclosed in a statement on Friday that while the loss was significant, no lives were claimed in the incident.
“The agency’s control room received the distressed call at exactly 11:02 pm on Thursday, 10th April 2025,” Akinyinka said.
“The fire personnel promptly deployed to the scene of the fire incident. On arrival, we met some lock-up shops well alight and we swiftly swung into action and restricted the fire from spreading to other nearby shops,” he added.
He further revealed that although 12 shops were affected by the fire, several others were salvaged due to the swift intervention of the firefighters.
“The fire affected 12 shops out of a large number of shops and we were able to save properties worth billions of naira in the market,” Akinyinka noted.
Providing insight into the likely cause, Akinyinka explained, “The fire was as a result of an upsurge in electricity which ignited nearby combustible materials.”
