Rayan Cherki’s stoppage-time strike salvaged a thrilling 2-2 draw for Olympique Lyonnais against Manchester United in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal clash on Thursday night.
All eyes were on United shot-stopper Andre Onana at the Groupama Stadium, especially after his heated verbal exchange with Lyon’s Nemanja Matic ahead of kickoff.
The spotlight intensified when Onana’s blunder allowed Thiago Almada to open the scoring in the 25th minute.
However, United responded just before the break, as young centre-back Leny Yoro netted his debut goal for the club, bringing the scores level at halftime.
The visitors thought they had snatched a crucial away victory when Joshua Zirkee’s well-timed header found the net in the 88th minute.
But Lyon had the final say, Cherki struck with virtually the last kick of the match, breaking United hearts and ensuring the tie remains delicately poised heading into the second leg.
