The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has imposed penalties totaling over N628 million on eight electricity distribution companies (DisCos) for violating the monthly energy caps for unmetered customers between July and September 2024.
The DisCos affected by this sanction include Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola.
In a statement released on Thursday, the commission emphasized that these companies failed to comply with the energy limits set for unmetered customers during the specified period. NERC has mandated the companies to issue credit adjustments to the affected customers by May 15, 2025.
The statement read, “Pursuant to Section 34(1)(d) of the Electricity Act 2023 (“EA 2023”), the commission has sanctioned eight Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) – Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola – for failing to fully comply with the monthly energy caps issued by the commission between July and September 2024 (2024/Q3).”
NERC reiterated that the sanctions are critical for maintaining regulatory compliance and protecting consumer rights within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.
