The Oyo State Police Command has arrested nine suspects in connection with the violent attack on Aagba Community in Surulere Local Government Area, which left properties destroyed and a septuagenarian dead.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Osifeso Adewale, the attack occurred on April 5, 2025, and was allegedly carried out by residents of a neighboring community amid a protracted land dispute.
The assailants reportedly razed nine houses and looted properties worth millions of naira in what police describe as a deliberate and targeted assault linked to an ongoing civil litigation over ownership of the disputed land.
Tragically, an elderly woman, Madam Rachael Bamidele, lost her life in the aftermath of the assault. The incident forced many villagers to flee their homes out of fear for their safety.
In response to the incident, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Johnson O. Adenola, deployed a team of tactical and intelligence officers, including personnel from the Police Mobile Force, to the affected area to restore peace and order.
“Our swift deployment of tactical units ensured the quick restoration of calm in the community, enabling displaced residents to return home and resume their daily activities without fear,” the statement read.
Following investigations, police apprehended one Salawudeen Ismaila, 33, from the neighboring Oko community, along with eight others. Authorities also recovered three unregistered Boxer motorcycles allegedly used during the attack. Efforts are underway to track down other suspects still at large.
“The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” Osifeso added.
The police command emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on violence and warned against acts of self-help in resolving disputes.
“We will not condone any form of brigandage or action that undermines the peace and security of the state,” the command stated. “Individuals or groups resorting to unlawful means to express grievances will be dealt with in accordance with the law.”
The police urged residents to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities through official emergency numbers: 615 (toll-free), 08081768614, 09054133071, and 09061299291.
