The convener of the Take-it-Back Movement and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has categorically ruled out any possibility of joining the proposed political coalition spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sowore made his position clear during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Arise TV, where he dismissed suggestions that he might align with the coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle.
He also debunked rumours linking him to the Social Democratic Party, stating that he had no intention of joining the party or any alliance formed by the nation’s political elite.
When asked directly if he would consider being part of the coalition reportedly being formed by Atiku and Obi, Sowore said, “I’m not joining any coalition, the coalition that they joined in 2013 and 2015 is what brought about the APC, so joining another coalition in 2025 is doing the same thing all over again without thinking of achieving the same set of results.”
He stressed that any meaningful alliance must come from the Nigerian people, particularly the disenfranchised and oppressed masses who have long suffered under the political dominance of recycled elites.
“The coalition that needs to be built is that of the oppressed, joining another coalition that is made up of the same people who were the ones that created the coalition that ruined Nigeria, it’s an injustice and an injury to the people of Nigeria,” he added.
Sowore further declared, “So you can never see me in their coalition and I will never be part of it, I’m not joining the SDP, I’m not part of those playing chess with the destiny of Nigerians.”
His comments come in the wake of reports that key opposition figures — including Atiku, Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai — have begun preliminary discussions to form a united political front against the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 elections.
Atiku had earlier confirmed the move during a press conference organised under the banner of Concerned Leaders and Political Stakeholders in Nigeria. During the event, the former PDP presidential candidate took a swipe at the current administration, accusing it of undermining democratic norms and governance structures for selfish ends.
He warned the federal government not to allow its obsession with political dominance to destabilise the country’s fragile democratic system.
“This is not just about Rivers State but about the future of Nigeria’s democracy,” Atiku stated.
“The government must not allow personal political interests and the desire to hold on to power at all costs to throw the country into unavoidable chaos through brazen subversion of the principles of federalism, democracy, and constitutional governance.”
Although the finer details of the coalition talks remain unclear, political analysts suggest the proposed alliance is aimed at creating a formidable opposition capable of challenging President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
