The Independent National Electoral commission INEC says all furniture and non-sensitive materials recently delivered in readiness for the 2023 general election were set ablaze by unknown gunmen in Idemili South local Government Area of Anambra state on Wednesday, Feb 1st 2023
Gunmen early Wednesday morning attacked the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Ojoto, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The hoodlums burnt the commission’s headquarters using Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs.
However, A release by the National Commissioner and Chairman Information and voter education committee, Festus Okoye said 729 ballot boxes,243 voting cubicle, 256 election bags, 11 megaphones, 1 electric power generator and large quantities of indelible ink and liquid gum were destroyed by the fire.
The statement added that uncollected permanent voters cards kept in the fireproof cabinet were not affected by the inferno.
Okoye said no sensitive materials have been delivered to the office, but the building as substantially damaged.
The statement assured people of Idemili that contingency arrangement will be made to replace the items.
The gunmen also attacked a police station in Nnobi, in the same local government area, and a residential building inside the station, where they killed a boy, and injured a girl.
The state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incidents in a press statement.
