Protest erupted in Rivers State on Tuesday as young demonstrators targeted symbols associated with former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike.
This incident is rooted in growing discontent with Wike’s tenure and influence in the region.
The protesters, predominantly youths, tore down an effigy of Chief Nyesom Wike and also vandalized billboards and banners bearing his image, as well as that of George Ariolu, the former Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. These actions took place within the Obio/Akpor LGA premises in Port Harcourt, a central area in Rivers State.
A video shared on social media captured the moment when three young men struggled to pull down the statue. As the protest gained momentum, more demonstrators joined in, successfully toppling the effigy. Amid the chaos, one protester was heard justifying their actions, stating, “the minister is no longer needed here.”
This protest reflects a broader dissatisfaction with the political leadership and influence of Wike and his allies in the region, signaling a call for change from the youth in Rivers State.
