The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, CP Ajao Adewale, has urged Abuja residents to adhere strictly to traffic regulations as part of broader efforts to uphold law and order within the city.
His appeal follows growing concerns over persistent traffic congestion in key parts of the capital, which has disrupted the usually free flow of movement and drawn criticism from road users.
Speaking through a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, CP Adewale emphasized that compliance with traffic rules is not only a civic duty but also crucial for ensuring safety and national development.
“Respecting traffic rules and regulations helps reduce congestion, especially in densely populated areas, and prevents avoidable accidents,” he stated.
The police chief condemned practices such as illegal parking, street trading, and roadside hawking, describing them as major contributors to traffic chaos and public safety hazards. He stressed that these actions could potentially lead to serious accidents and fatalities.
“The police are not adversaries; we are partners in progress. Respect for officers, obedience to traffic regulations, and refraining from illegal roadside activities are vital to creating a safer, more organized FCT,” Adewale said.
He also issued a stern warning to individuals or groups who may seek to interfere with or attack officers performing their lawful duties, particularly in traffic control and public safety roles.
“Anyone found assaulting or obstructing officers, especially those performing traffic and public safety duties, will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” he said.
CP Adewale reaffirmed the command’s dedication to protecting lives and property across the territory and encouraged residents to play their part by reporting traffic offenses, suspicious behavior, or emergencies using the available hotlines.
