Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, has landed in Germany after being freed from detention in Benin Republic.
The Nation reported that he arrived at Hamburg International Airport on Monday to join his wife and children, who are German citizens.
A video circulating on social media shows Igboho being welcomed by a UK-based Nigerian Islamic cleric, Saheed Shittu, at the airport in Hamburg.
Igboho, who has a resident permit in Germany, expressed his gratitude to all his supporters and well-wishers for their solidarity during his ordeal.
Igboho was arrested in Cotonou in July 2021 along with his wife, Ropo, while trying to board a flight to Germany. He was accused of possessing a fake Beninese passport and inciting violence in Nigeria. He spent over two years in custody as his lawyers battled for his release.
His arrest came after the Nigerian authorities raided his home in Ibadan, Oyo state, on July 1, 2021, and declared him wanted for allegedly stockpiling arms and promoting secession. Igboho denied the allegations and claimed he was fighting for the rights of the Yoruba people against oppression and injustice.
Interestingly, Igboho’s release coincided with his 51st birthday, which he celebrated with his family in Germany. He said he is now free to return to Nigeria or any other country of his choice as he has fulfilled all the legal conditions for his bail.
