A tragic incident has occurred in Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State involving casualties from both the police force and members of the Omuma Security Planning and Advisory Committee.
This development coincides with widespread tension and protests across all 23 Local Government Areas of the state.
These protests erupted following the expiration of the three-year tenure of elected chairmen of LGAs and ward councillors.
According to Vanguard, the indicate incidents of gunfire allegedly involving security personnel at various LGAs including Port Harcourt City, Obio/Akpor, Emohua, Eleme, and Khana, were perpetrated by unidentified individuals.
At midday, it was reported that two individuals were fatally shot in Omuma LGA during clashes that erupted in the area. According to a local source, the initial violence began when police officers, reportedly attached to a local politician, fired upon vigilante members from one of the groups involved in the confrontation at Omuma council secretariat. In retaliation, members of the victim’s group retaliated against the security personnel.
The police authorities in the state have not officially confirmed these events as of press time. However, a police source within Omuma acknowledged that two people were indeed shot during the altercation.
