Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that the people of the South-West region will not support the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general elections.
Makinde, during a campaign in Ondo State Thursday, attributed this decision to the hardship inflicted on Nigerians by the APC, according to Sahara Reporters.
Makinde stated that the Yoruba people have realized their mistake in backing President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 elections.
As leader of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-West, Makinde expressed confidence in his party’s control of the region.
Contrary to Makinde’s stance, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje claimed the party would capture the South-West for President Tinubu in 2027.
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa also asserted that the PDP was “dead” in the state, citing the return of opposition leaders to the APC.
Makinde countered these claims, stating the PDP remains strong in the South-West.
He predicted Ganduje would be surprised by the people’s support for the PDP. Makinde made these remarks during a campaign in Ondo State, emphasizing the region’s voters would make their voices heard.
The November 16, 2024, governorship election in Ondo State is expected to be a significant indicator of the region’s political leanings. The outcome may influence the 2027 general elections and the ongoing rivalry between the PDP and APC.
“If wishes were horses, everybody would be riding it. I can tell you that the people of the South-West of Nigeria are wiser and especially in Ondo State. On November 16, they will tell him (Ganduje) that Ondo State and indeed South-West is for the PDP,” he said.
Makinde added, “Talk, they say is cheap. You can say whatever you like with your mouth but the people of Ondo State, they will speak loud and clear on November 16, 2024 and then all of us in this country will hear it loud and clear.”
