The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria has strongly denounced the recent surge of violence in Plateau State, urging the Federal Government to take swift and decisive steps to bring the escalating crisis to an end.
In a statement released on Tuesday from Kaduna, the council voiced grave concern over the recurring bloodshed that has plagued communities and caused immense grief among families in the region.
“We call on the federal government to take immediate and decisive action to halt this crisis. It is imperative that the authorities prioritize the safety of citizens by not only condemning these heinous acts but also by ensuring that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice,” said Isah Abubakar, the National President of the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria.
The PUNCH reported, the council’s demand follows the recent condemnation by President Bola Tinubu, who decried the latest attacks in Plateau State that resulted in the deaths of more than 40 people.
Tinubu urged Governor Caleb Mutfwang to take bold political steps toward resolving the persistent conflict and fostering lasting peace.
“The ongoing violence between communities in Plateau State, rooted in misunderstandings between different ethnic and religious groups, must cease,” Tinubu stated.
Adding its voice to the growing calls for action, the Christian Association of Nigeria described the recent killings as a serious threat to the nation’s unity and harmony.
CAN President, Daniel Okoh, appealed to security operatives to act with urgency and determination to apprehend those responsible, while also pressing the government to bolster efforts to protect all communities and avert further violence.
The Northern Youth Council further stressed the importance of solidarity among young people in the North, urging them to champion peace and hold leaders accountable.
“We urge Northern Nigeria to unite against these menacing forces that threaten our peace, stability, and future. It is crucial that we come together, regardless of our backgrounds, to stand firm against the evil that seeks to divide and destroy our communities,” Abubakar added.
