The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal, which convened at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, has invalidated the election victory of Mr. Thaddeus Atta from the Labour Party, who was previously declared as the legitimate representative for the Eti Osa Federal Constituency.
The tribunal’s lead judgement, delivered on Monday night, declared the elections inconclusive and mandated the Independent National Electoral Commission to organise a supplemental election within a 90-day period. This supplementary election is to be conducted in 33 polling units where elections were not held.
Reacting to the ruling Tuesday morning in a post on X, formerly Twitter, Atta said there was no cause for alarm, noting that he was not “sacked” by the court.
“The Tribunal has simply ordered a re-run (supplementary election) in the 32 polling units where elections did not hold. We will continue working for Etiosa. I urge constituents to keep calm as we are unshaken. We will get through this together,” he said.
Both Ibrahim Babajide Obanikoro of the All Progressives Congress and Bankole Wellington, the PDP candidate who finished second in the polls, filed petitions to contest the February 25 elections.
Atta, who received 24,075 votes, was proclaimed the winner of that election by INEC, with Banky W and IBO receiving 18,668 and 16,901 votes, respectively.
