The Lagos State Government has impounded more than 200 vehicles deemed unfit for road use, in a statewide enforcement operation aimed at boosting road safety.
The operation was carried out by the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service and targeted a variety of vehicles, particularly commercial minibuses such as danfos and korope.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the director of VIS, Mr. Akin-George Fashola, the exercise is part of a broader initiative to minimise road accidents caused by mechanically faulty vehicles.
“This enforcement is not limited to private cars as many assume,” Fashola said in a statement issued on Sunday. “All vehicle categories, especially those used for commercial transport, are under scrutiny. Our goal is to ensure every vehicle on Lagos roads meets safety standards.”
The statement, which was released through Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlola, Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation, emphasized that commercial vehicle owners must prioritise routine inspections before putting their vehicles to use.
“Before using your vehicle for commercial purposes, ensure it is roadworthy. You can visit any of our annex offices for proper inspection,” Fashola advised.
He also assured residents that the VIS would continue similar operations across the state to promote safer, more efficient transportation.
“The enforcement drive will be sustained to make our roads safer for all users,” he added.
The Lagos State Government continues to stress the importance of compliance with road safety regulations as part of its broader traffic management and public safety strategy.
