An Edo State High Court sitting in Igarra, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, has nullified the impeachment of the suspended chairman of the council, Mr. Taju Alade, describing the action as unconstitutional and ordering his immediate return to office.
Presiding over the matter, Justice B. A. Okoh on Wednesday ruled that the process that led to Alade’s removal was invalid.
He directed the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure that the reinstated chairman is provided with adequate security to resume his duties.
In his judgment, Justice Okoh firmly dismissed the state government’s argument that the court lacked jurisdiction.
“This court has the jurisdiction to hear and determine this matter,” he stated, reinforcing the judiciary’s role in upholding democratic principles at the local government level.
The court’s verdict marks a significant legal victory for Alade, who had challenged his removal from office.
“I have always believed in the rule of law. Today’s judgment is a testament that justice can still prevail in our system,” Alade told journalists shortly after the ruling.
