In a significant development, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has inaugurated the members of the State Independent Electoral Commission, paving the way for the conduct of local government elections in the state.
While inaugurating the commission at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, Governor Soludo charged them to “render nothing short of sterling service to the state’s people.”
The commission, headed by Genevieve Osakwe, a Magistrate, as chairman, has Mrs. Bernadine Obande, Osita Cyril Igbokwe, Chinedu Anthony Nnalue, Mrs. Helen Ifeyinwa Umeh, and Mr. John Emeka Okeke as members.
The terms of reference of the Commission include organizing, undertaking, and supervising all elections and matters related to elections to the elective offices in the local government councils in the state.
According to the Anambra State Electoral Law 2024, other functions of the commission include the division of local governments into such number of wards or constituencies as prescribed by law for the elections to be conducted by the commission.
The inauguration of the commission comes as a response to the clamor by Civil Society Organizations and opposition political parties in the state for the local government election.
