Liverpool edged closer to securing the Premier League title after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday, thanks to a late strike from substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose 76th-minute finish followed a chaotic goalmouth scramble.
Leicester, desperate for a win to delay their looming relegation, managed to contain the league leaders for much of the match.
But Alexander-Arnold’s decisive goal shattered their resistance and ultimately sealed their fate, confirming their drop from the top flight.
The Reds were in a position to clinch their 20th English top-flight title outright had Ipswich Town managed to beat Arsenal earlier in the day.
That result didn’t materialize, but Liverpool’s coronation now seems inevitable. They could be crowned champions if Arsenal fail to beat Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
If that doesn’t happen, Arne Slot’s men can seal the title themselves with a victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield next weekend.
Liverpool currently sit on 79 points from 33 matches, while Arsenal trail with 66 from the same number of games.
Leicester’s loss, their ninth consecutive home league defeat without scoring, a new English record, leaves them on 18 points, well adrift of 17th-placed West Ham and officially relegated.
